GREENING HOMES AND GARDENS

Greening Homes and Gardens 2010 was an outstanding success with hundreds turning out despite miserable weather.

Organisers reported a surge in well-informed visitors keen to find out more about renewable energy and energy saving measures for the home and garden.

This year’s open homes featured wind turbines, heat pumps, solar panels and heating with wood pellets and logs. There was a chance to see how a listed house in Cromarty has been refurbished to modern insulation standards, and compare it with a new house still being built. For gardeners, vegetable growing, forest gardening, composting and mulching were on display.  Visitors were also able to see behind the scenes at Poyntzfield Herb Nursery and tour the Old Orchard in Cromarty and visit Netherton Community Garden, at Culbokie.

The travelling Conch sound studio proved a popular addition to the day, with people clambering in listen and tell their stories while taking shelter from the rain.

The exhibition at Findon Hall was sponsored by Ullapool-based Invisible Heating Systems which supplies a wide range of heating and cooling systems, including heat pumps, solar panels and underfloor heating.
