Company secretary

Martin has been a member of Transition Black Isle since shortly after it formed, taking a particularly interest in energy and transport issues, and acting as treasurer from 2010 to 2013.

Previously an accountant and finance director in the travel industry, Martin took advantage of redundancy in 2005 to work with his wife, Penny Edwards, in their timber business, Falkirk Wood. The business was formed to establish an outlet for local Scottish hardwood timber, and promote its use. In 2008 they sold the business, mainly for health reasons, moved to the Highlands, and Martin retrained in renewable energy, taking a masters’ degree at the Centre for Alternative Energy.

The MSc was put to good use in specifying Martin and Penny’s new Passive House – a building obtaining almost all its space heating from passive sources – completed in 2013, and thought tobe the first of its sort in the Highlands. Martin writes a monthly column on Passive House issues for Energy North, and carries out consultancy work on domestic energy topics.

When not working on TBI or energy issues, Martin is a keen veg. gardener, hill walker, sea kayaker and telemark skier.
