'21st Century Silent Movies' at Cromarty Arts Trust

03 March 2023, Starts: 14:00, Ends: 15:00

Friday 3 and Saturday 4 March  2.00 - 3.00  The Stables Cromarty

From 2nd-4th March at The Stables, dance artist Julia McGhee, sound artist Nicolette Macleod and filmmaker Alan Paterson, will work together on a new research project layering live experimental sound with projected video.  We’ve called this project idea 21st century silent movies as it’s a modern-day, digital version of the analogue films that were screened in cinemas in the early 20th century with a live orchestral or piano soundtrack.

We began testing this idea whilst in residency at Lyth Arts Centre for The Morrich Project, where filmed outdoor performance work was projected onto a large screen, and Nicolette improvised a live experimental soundscape made from amplified objects, voice and sound recordings from the natural environment.  Within this short test we discovered that layering the video with Nicolette’s live sound brings strong narrative connections not evident from the video alone and we think this type of live performance has great potential to be explored.

We’d like to invite you to visit us in the exhibition space at The Stables during the following drop-in times:

Friday 3rd March 2.00-3.00pm
Saturday 4th March 2.00-3.00pm

These will be opportunities to see what we’re working on and to have a chat with us.

If you’d like to come along, please drop us email at julia@juliamcghee.co.uk just so we know how many people to expect.

We look forward to seeing you if you can make it,

Julia, Nicolette and Alan.
