Just had a look at the pot marigolds in the polytunnel, and they're covered in greenfly. but the beasties haven't moved on to the tomatoes, even though the toms are brushing up against the pot marigolds. From my polytunnel book, it seems as if there are numerous varieties of greenfly, which are very fussy about what they feed on - so should I chop back the pot marigolds to get rid of the greenfly, or are they doing me a favour in luring the greenfly away from the toms? Anyone got any ideas? My inclination is to chop back the pot marigolds, as they're taking over a bit anyway.

You can get a pyrethrin spray based on crysanthemums. We have one called 'bugclear' for fruit and veg. Mabe real crysanthemums would work too. It works very well on greenfly but not on fruit fly. Sticky paper is quite effective for them but doesn't get them all.

I chopped down the pot marigolds anyway - there seemed to be signs of the aphids switching to the tomatoes. But suddenly there seem to be a few hoverflies in the polytunnel, so maybe they'll mop up the few aphids left behind. I think we need to check out the other options for the future.
