The Shieling Project in Glen Strathfarrar
An enquiry about seed potatoes still available after Potato Day, has brought us into contact with the Shieling Project, based at Dunmaglass near Struy in Glen Strathfarrar. The Home Page of their website issues the following invitation and summary of what they do
Do you want to milk a cow, build a bothy, or plant a forest? Be an archaeologist, a poet, a weaver? Come outdoors and get stuck in to shieling life with us.
The Shieling Project is an off-grid learning centre based in Glen Strathfarrar, near Beauly in the Highlands of Scotland. The project is all about outdoor living – from looking after our livestock to making real buildings, from weaving baskets to making burgers from the meat we have raised here. The tradition of the shieling where folk lived outdoors all summer herding the cattle, gives us a window onto the past, but also helps us look forward to a sustainable future.
A Project currently running is 'Summerlings Outdoor Nursery', which is described as follows
Summerlings is an outdoor nursery for 3-5 year olds based at the Shieling Project.
Through play in the outdoors children will develop their physical and mental ability, becoming comfortable and confident in the outdoors. Our adventures will help develop a strong attachment to the local landscape, its past, present and future. There will be freedom, time and space for the children to enjoy and create their own learning journey.
Promoting sustainable living, connecting to the land and outdoors in their daily lives, children will be educated in the core functioning of a healthy life. Above all else children who attend our day care facility will be in a happy, stimulating and safe environment dedicated to their fullest development and brightest future.
