World Soil Day
05 December 2023
Thursday 5 November World Soil Day
This year's theme focuses on soil and water as the foundation for food production, ecosystems, and human well-being.
📌 Rainfed agriculture systems account for 80 percent of croplands, contributing to 60 percent of the global food production
📌 Improved soil and water management improves the land's capacity to withstand extreme climate events such as droughts, floods and sand/dust storms
📌 Healthy soils act as a carbon sink.More amazing soil facts from the Soil Association:
It is estimated that at least a quarter of all earth's species live in the soil
One gram of soil (a quarter of a tablespoon) can harbour up to 10 billion organisms
Only about 1% of the microorganisms found in soil have been identified so far
95% of food production relies on the soil.
