Climate Feis - Inspiring Campaigns from the Past - Liz Macrae Shaw
06 August 2021, Starts: 19:00
Friday 6 August 7.00 by Zoom
A talk by local author, Liz Macrae Shaw
“As a writer of historical fiction set on Skye I have investigated the Clearances and their effects. During this time, sustainable crofting activity was replaced in many areas of the Highlands by large scale sheep production. As well as the human cost of depopulation, over-grazing led to the destruction of woodlands and the degradation of the landscape. This year is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Skye bard and political campaigner, Mairi Mhor nan Orain (Great Mary of the Songs). Her songs are full of her love of the natural world and her despair at the destruction caused by the Clearances. Her inspiring life is the subject of my first book, ‘Love and Music will Endure’. I believe that she is an inspiration not just for her times but for our own.”
