Skye & Lochalsh 'Healthy Homes' project

February 2024

Healthy Homes for Skye, Raasay & Lochalsh
online conference

in partnership with Carbon Neutral Islands Raasay

This conference was held online on Friday 9 February as a follow-up to the  Healthy Homes survey and report (see below).  It was attended by  local and national politicians, representatives of community groups, technical experts on housing policy and upgrading to clean heating, and members of the public from Skye and further afield.

The conference looked in depth at all aspects of retrofitting and upgrading both owner-occupied and rented homes, with emphasis on how projects in rural areas like Skye, Lochalsh and Raasay could be made more effective and householder-friendly by being co-operative and community-led.  The presentations given and a recording of the conference proceedings have been made available on the Healthy Homes website   www.healthyhomessl.co.uk .

Healthy Homes for Skye, Raasay and Lochalsh:

report now available              -  from Skye Climate Action

We are pleased to announce that the Healthy Homes report is now available to download.  You can download the full report here, and the 2-page summary here, or visit the Healthy Homes website www.healthyhomessl.co.uk

The Healthy Homes report provides the first community-led, all-tenure, detailed housing condition and energy efficiency information specific to Skye, Raasay & Lochalsh. It reveals that housing conditions here are notably worse than in The Highland Council area and Scotland as a whole. Some examples:

Only 12% of our homes are always warm enough in winter (81% in Scotland) 37% of our homes have mould (7% in The Highland Council area)52% of our householders said poor insulation made their home hard to heat (10% in Scotland).Householders said the main barriers to getting repairs and upgrades done on their homes are: it is too expensive (60%), grants aren't available (29%) and builders aren't available (28%).
