I would not plant potatoes before April here, mostly I'd plant protected in about second week of April and unprotected in the month beginning mid April. Potatoes do not NEED chitting but 2 to 4 weeks (temperature dependent) of chitting can make emergence once planted a week or two earlier. So, provided people have their potatoes by mid March it will definitely be in ample time.

However, supplies begin to run out before then (after all, the season is ahead of us in most of UK) so people tend to order sooner.

The latest we should organise a potato day is Sunday 13th March, the weekend of 5th / 6th March might be better, the weekend of 26th / 27th February is only 6 weeks away so looking a bit tight to organise well unless there are strong reasons to go for that.

It could be a weekday evening thing but that could limit spin-off activities a bit.

My preference is for a venue near the A9: North Kessock, Culbokie, possibly Munlochy. We'd probably need more space than Glachbeg could provide.

Are there any events like community markets happening at the right time / place that we could follow on from or combine with?

I want to see 200+ people there. I know that sounds optimistic but I'm pretty sure we can get 100+. I've been to a couple of potato days elsewhere and attendance has been thousands even in rural-ish village halls. I'll be surprised if we get much more than 300 given the short timescale to organise.

We probably need to fix the date and location by the end of January so contribute your suggestions and advice pronto, please.

We are part of the rapidly expanding worldwide Transition Towns movement. The Black Isle is a peninsula of about 100 sq miles ENE of Inverness in Scotland, UK.
